The Mid Rim was still relatively under-protected by the Republic. Even so, the commanders of the new expeditionary fleet were no one’s fools. Stealth and silence were as much a part of the Sith military as it was a part of the order itself. The battle cruisers weren’t out in force like it had been with the other two fleets. Last anyone heard, Bravo was getting stand-by orders to be pulled back in a defensive posture. That had come from Ultra One directly and everyone knew she had a good reason for it. The target selected for them by Ultra one was the Roche asteroids and particularly the Verpine.
Some of the scout ships had been captured civilian craft. Others had been crafted from spare parts and called “uglies” for their awkward, chop-shop method of construction. They all had their purpose and their place in the operation. Already, there were some forward personnel that were posing as contractors looking to get a weapons purchase. The next phase was to make it look like pirates were making a long-overdue raid.
A uniform-clad figure appeared on the holocom unit’s secured frequency. “Sir phase one is complete.”
“Good, go to phase two. Deploy the uglies and have at it. Mind their defenses as that’s what they do down there for giggles.”
“Understood.”
Moments later, there were many ships of varied sizes and composites of many more makes and models that swarmed the complex of asteroids that were part of the Roche system. Like a swarm of angry hornets, they descended on the larger facilities and began the assault both in the air and on the ground. Surely, the Verpine would be overwhelmed in a matter of minutes as the false pirate attack went out. The remainder of the fleet knew it was time to move on the third and final phase when they heard the distress signals and mimicked Republic com signals down to the IFF codes.
“Mayday, mayday, this is Roche, we are under heavy pirate attack. We require the assistance of any ship in the area that has massive firepower. Please, we are under heavy pirate attack.”
The fleet commander smiled in full as it was time to finally move in for the kill, so to speak. It was time to appear as neutrals instead of the Republic. All uniforms had been sterilized of markings that could have easily identified them. The rest of the fleet moved in and right away it looked like battle.
The power in the asteroid manufacturing plants was beginning to flicker. The artificial gravity generators were also fading in and out. The endless progress on projects had slowed and the slowly ground to a halt. Some had already been ruined while others were simply waiting the battle out. All the ships looked and sounded of pirates and their improvised ships. The lights flickering were enough to begin to concern the insectoid Verpine as they scurried to salvage what they could.
The unthinkable began to happen: the automated defense system wasn’t enough to stop these pirates. This time, it seemed they had been studied and now they were being defeated. There were reports all through the asteroids…they were being raided. Power all through the asteroids was fazing in and out. It was time to issue a distress signal.
The power went out at last. It didn’t flicker, it simply went out. With that, the Verpine were sitting ducks for their insectoid-reptillian metabolisms. Without light, they were simply unable to function. There were a few initial stirrings in the dark, but finally, everything became as silent as it was dark.
It seemed the lights had come back on. The Pirates were gone or dead. There were a couple of casualties as they lay there in their seemingly improvised flight suits. There were minor sighs of relief as the Verpine went back to work as automatons. Some were, once they were lucid again, curious as to who had saved them. Before long, it seemed that they had actually been spared by separatist forces rather than the Republic.
However, there was one report that was sent out over a secure band. It was a secured and direct line to Korriban. News of the real victory was being sent to Ultra One.
