Chancellor Phaar K'in couldn't have imagined a worse way to start the day. Habits being habits, he always took his morning tea as he watched the news. The sad irony of it all was that with most of the major issue votes behind him at last, he was finally able to get a good night's sleep.
He had been cheerful that morning as he was able to get the full nihght's sleep that didn't start with his head rising from the top of his desk. Sitting down to that morning tea, he watched the news play out on the holonet. He'd manage to catch it as it displayed the financial news. It looked like the market had been interrupted by something. The news shifted seconds later from charts of stocks to an image that caught his attention in full. Chancellor Phar K'in took a sip until his eyes glanced over the headline. "Under Attack, Corellia Bucks Republic Membership" flashed in bright red letters.
Eyes wide, he spat out his sip of tea and reeled. "What?!" he shouted. His secretary, hearing the commotion stepped in. "Chancellor sir, is everything alright?"
"Sayeeda, tell me, am I reading this right or have I been drafting one vote agenda too many?"
Shaking her head, the Twi'lek answered, "No Chancellor, you're not hallucinating. Corellia came under attack. In fact, there is some video coming in that you'll want to see."
He nodded, "About the attack?"
"A little more than that. The president of Corellia has sent out a formal address, wer're guessing out of his bunker. It's coming in live."
He was struck by the stoic expression set on the otherwise jovial politician. He knew the words about to come out of his mouth weren't going to be ones he wanted to hear. Unblinking, Chancellor K'in watched as he adjusted the mic and cleared his throat subtly before he began,
"Ladies and gentlemen, this is the President of the Indipendent Planet of Corellia speaking. I come to you tonight to make a statement on the current situation. As I speak, there is a Republic frigate in the air that has come without any notice to me and has subsequently invaded our sovereign space. We are currently under attack by forces we already had under control with our own standing milita. It is on this alone that I must conclude that the Republic has been waiting for a reason all this time to have its military come. It seems that now these unwitting nationalists have given them that reason as they attempted to encite a rebellion."
"As of thirteen-hundred hours local time, there was an attack on the surface here at the planetary capitol. A number of unknown ships entered the atmosphere and began to initiate an attack. Soon after, the attacks turned on Republic installations put here under the conditions of a treaty. Many of my constituents have made it clear that they feel these treaties we have had wih the Republic are unequal ones. With these new developments I feel that my choice is clear."
"It is under the protest of my constitutents, and under these circumstances that I will bybass the slow, often useless process of diplomatic negotiations with the Republic and make Corellia's stance very clear. We do not, I repeat, do not, want to continue our political relations with the Republic. No longer will we offer any support or excesses of trade to the Republic. Thought I have made it clear that this may hurt us more than help, I am ultimately the voice of my people in this matter. So I will say it again, we the Independent Planet of Corellia refuse to join the Republic."
There was another quote said by every president before him, now considered the standard end of every presidental address, "May the Force be with Corellia."
Just like that, the holocom began to ring incessantly. It would be like that all day. The Chancellor sighed. He dialed a certain frequency and hoped that the Jedi Grandmaster wasn't already too busy.
