The Council had gathered again, but this was not business as usual. There was silence instead of mild camraderie. There was a room full of thousand-parsec stares. Though assembled, all eyes were on one empty chair and on the thought that there should have been one of thier own still in it. A charged silence had to be broken, but no one could bring themselves to speak for some time. The sound of speeders flying by echoed softly in the room through the thick sheets of glass that separated the lofty chamber at the top of the temple from the morning breeze. One closed his eyes and remarked, "We are all told that we should rejoice for those who have become one with the Force. In that spirit, we should celebrate the passing of our leader, Salix Maas. Yes, his loss was sudden, and it was not foreseen by any of us. We are Jedi, we are not gods, nor should we ever aspire to be gods." There was a heavy sigh, "Unexpected as it was, his loss is a part of life. Some of us possess the ability to speak to those who choose to emerge from the neitherworld of the Force. He has not left us, he has simply passed on to what I feel is a more advanced state of being. With that, I hope we can draw some comfort knowing that he is still with us in some form. Were it any of us in his place, I'm sure he'd say the same. He would also urge us to move forward and to make sure that the order remains as strong as it has been. We must carry his memory and carry on: we must seek out a new grandmaster, which is why we are all here."
There were still some of the stares and many nods. There was one voice, alsmost tinged with sadness that answered, "Master Kythas is right, we must carry on. Well said. All things come in cycles, and so we must go through an election cycle of our own. We have before us, the difficult task of electing a new grandmaster, while managing the safety of the election of the new Chancellor. We have faced more difficult times, especially in the dark times of the Hyperspace Wars and I can say with confidence that we can face this. Tempting as it may be, we cannot spend time attempting to assign blame for his death. The press is doing a good enough job of that for us at the moment. Instead, we must move forward with seeking out candidates among our ranks who have the ability to lead this order along the right path and one who is capable of dealing with the Sith threat. Are there any who wish to nominate candidates at this time?"
There were a couple of names mentioned after some minutes. One name later added to the list of nominees was a shocker: one rose and said, "There is only one who could be most effective in dealing with the Sith problem: Sidro Haank."
There were blinks of surprise. "Why would you nominate him at a time like this, he left us to join thier ranks. How could we--?"
"We are not the Sith, we can forgive his fall. We cannot overlook the fact that, should he choose to join our ranks again, he would have intimate knowledge of thier order. We also know that when he was here, he was able to become a master, making him eligible to sit in this very chamber. Last any had seen of him, he was the Sultan or leader of the Gray Jedi faction. We know he can lead. For these reasons, and let the record show it, I'm nominating him."
"So noted. We must find him and notify him as we would any other candidate."
After clearing her throat another in the Council added, "we may not have to search very far. There are a number of reported sigthings of him here on Coruscant. He is alleged to have been here for at least the last two weeks."
There were a number of surprised looks. It seemed that fate was not without a sense of justice or comedy after all. Perhaos he would help them, or perhaps he was lost to them after all. Only the Force itself knew which at the moment. For now, there was still the current order of business.
"Are there any other nominees at this time?"
There was a numb if not stunned silence that answered. Lingering like dust in the air, it remained. Another calmly said, "Speak now or never." There was a pause. "So noted, there are no other candidates. Seek out and notify the ones listed on record. This session is now closed."
