Name: Ilal
Age: 43
Race: Human
Class: Jedi
Rank: Jedi Master/ Jedi Council Member
Faction: Jedi Order/ Republic
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 190 lbs.
Physical Description: Ilal has large, black eyes which emit little emotion. Brown skin, shaven head and a small goatee of black hair grace his features. Oddly enough, he is the only Jedi Master who might be considered portly. He usually smiles and cracks jokes at random to ease tension and relax, but will often discuss serious matters inside such jokes.
He has unusually quick reaction times, and can move with amazing speed in counterattack, but is slow on the attack and more mobile aspects of combat. He has prosthetic knees which limit his speed and mobility over distance due to a genetic disorder inherited from his father's side.
He is usually seen in a simple brown robe, pulled completely over his body matched to a pair of pink and green sandals, along with a pair of faux cat's paws dangling from his neck on a chain, next to a small gem. Like all aspects of his life, these items are not worn at random, and each carries with it a specific meaning to Ilal.
Personallity: Ilal tends to be humourous and off-center, while still staying surpisingly bland in tone. He is known for deep insight, incredible loyalty, compassion and insight. He takes great pride in his station asn Jedi Council Member, rightly viewing it as the greatest achievement he has ever made in his entire life. However, he does have a good deal of suppressed anger at how some Jedi Council Members have treated him in the past, and while most of those responsible have either left the council or died, the feeling itself is still alive and well. But this is something he keeps to himself for the most part, and he often plays the role of lovable goof with practical jokes, and is surprisingly good with younglings, producing extremely competent, stable and outgoing students. He is quite brave, a stoic at heart, and will not back down from a necessary conflict, as more than one enemy has found to their suprise.
Strengths: Ilal is primarily a philosipher and a healer when it comes to the Force. He has studied it's relationship to life and the soul intently, and is extremely well-acquainted with the various phsyiologies and diseases afflicting various species, often performing the role of medic when traveling with a group of Jedi. He is also a very effective bodyguard, and has stopped more than one Sith assasin from doing anything more than ignite their saber, and even his staunchest critics will sing his praises on this talent.
Weakness: Due to previous experiences with certain Council members in the past, Ilal has a strong inferiority complex, as well as a desire to placate powerful members of the Council. The result is that he often points out potential problems with a degree of levity, out of fear that his advice will be disregarded based on personal prejudices, as has happened more times than once. He is sometimes silent when he should speak, and speaks when he out to be silent, although this has changed due to previous positive experiences with the former head of the Jedi Council. He also still carries the resentments from those past experiences as well, and the inclinations that go with them for revenge and demonstrated superiority.
Fears: What is not common knowledge amongst the Jedi Council is Ilal's lifemate, a Tileaxu female by the name of Umi L-Khalir. The proverbial love of his life, his care for her is matched only by his fear that one day his fellow Council members will discover her exsistance and demand that he abandoan her. For a man who spent much of his life trusting none but a few close friends and one family member, with long streches of loneliness in between, he values his friends intensely, and Umi more than all of them put together. To choose between that and his self image would be a loss that would be virtually incalcuable.
Dreams: Ilal dreams of being assured that his current relationship will be tolerated by the new leader of the Council, and that a similair relationship with the new leader will emerge with an increase in Ilal's position therin from one of the most junior members to one of the most respected.
Equipment: Lightsaber: Ilal posseses an unkown number of small lightsabers, each small metallic cylinders resembling a female cosmetic product utilized near the respiratory openings. Each saber has a blade with a distinct color, and can range from one to thirty inches. Known colors included choral, lava red, mocha and glitter pink. Rumors of a rig allowing four or more blades to be employed on the same hand are not yet confirmed, although Ilal has joked about creating a so-called "Five Shade System".
Ships: The “Custard Cart” is a medium sized freighter with about the same elegance and attraction as a flying brick. A flying, pink brick. A flying, pink brick that's past it's prime. Based on an old Bothan trading freighter, with a rectangular hull design and outlay that was pokey twenty years ago and is out of date today, it has a level of age and tackiness rarely seen except for chemically-induced hallucinations. It is however extremely well-armored, incredibly fast and agile in navigating through hyperspace, and capable of holding deceptively large amounts of cargo or troops with little risk of detection. Outside racks allow the mounting of up to 6 turbolaser cannons if adequate crew are on board to maintain and fire them, allowing intensive fire support when engaging from the ground. However, it is usually three smaller cannons, concealed under folding panels inside the ship, along with a special burst proton torpedo launcher capable of firing five torpedos (from a six round magazine) at the same time accurately at widely seperated targets. The ship is not however at all manuverable in an atmosphere, and while capable of quick bursts of speed and manuver in space it tends to fly like a drunken bat in the air, and usually touches down instead of risking an atmospheric engagement. The result is a ship that can provide good protection for it's crew and troops on the ground, and a quick escape in space, but somewhat of a disadvantage in the air or in sustained space engagements.
Associates: Bilal is virtually always followed by several of his "associates" at all times. They follow the Jedi on a line of small, floating repulsor discs in a line half a meter behind him.
Joe: A small, blue fish in a transparisteel fishbowl, Joe is often seen feeding Bilal in Council meetings. Sometimes called "Fluffy" for some reason.
Frank: Small squaking blue parrot with beatiful plumage. Very loyal. Not seen after an incident involving another Jedi's pain medication that bore a strong resemblance to birdseed.
Theodore: A small, carefully groomed tree sculpted into an ancient tribal symbol.
Bubbles: Small fountain, often used by Bilal for washing hands. Visitation rights to the Council temporarily suspended after a splashing incident.
Rock: A small rock, approxmately half a kilogram in weight. Smooth.
Moochie: Pink snake, supported on a tree. Sometimes known as the "Snake of Truth." Posseses a long time capable of consuming small insects.
Background:
Ilal's family consisted of a loose association of shippers and part-time smugglers eeking out a living on old trading routes. If someone wanted to ship something outside of established routes, either to avoide surveillance or to ensure delivery, they would send one of Ilal's family members, often keeping Ilal as a line-in hostage at various port cities to ensure delivery. There are few records of where the family came from. Most of the members are self-educated, the grand-sons of minor criminals on worlds where bias towards illegal ventures can extend down generations. The family compensated by joining a local religious cult that was designed to redeem the children of career criminals into a life of adequacy by a variety of biochemical treatments, designed to strentghen the nerves and deaden pain. However, outside of numbing the pain the cult offered little in the way of betterment, and it was only due to the relative kindness of many of Ilal's captors that the boy was allowed an education outside the world of smuggling, shipping and petty crime.
Searching for a more lucrative career, his mother apprenticed him out to a local crime family to learn the finer points of extortion, intimidation and assasination, with both familes garnering substantial portions of the resultant earnings. But the inquisitve nature of the child, and his ability to listen in on the various tongues spoken in the entry room provoked further interest. On a whim, the crime lord passed him off to the organization's doctor to see what could be made of him: The doctor, a local Hutt, decided to train him as a physician and give him a way out of a life of crime. This failed however, as the family religion forbade dealing with "snakes" as the Hutts were called. The training also had a secondary edge: The Hutt was also an undercover operative for the Jedi Counsel investigating the family, and managed to instill some basic training excercises under the guise of physical education. But after seven years of such training, his parents discovered the boy was being trained by a Hutt, and due to religious views of Hutts as "snakes", they reintroduced him to their old biochemical treatments, which submerged his abilities. He fell off the Jedi radar after that, and many wondered what happend to the young child known as Yali by his old tutor.
After dodging from port to port, Ilal worked with whatever gang needed an extra man, picking up knowledge about additional species whenever he got the chance. After a job went south and the freighter Ilal worked on was boarded mid-atmosphere, he ended up in a penal colony for smuggling.
HIs time in prision was a major change in his life. Due to his interests in alien species, his family decided against paying off the local government, and Ilal was greeted with 5 years of harsh labor and neurological treatments to ensure docility and repentance. His fifth year in, he was visited by a local Jedi brought in to investigate allegations of torture at the facilities. Curious that a being with his level of education would be in for such a low-level charge, the Jedi formed a friendship with Ilal, and eventually discovered a barely submerged Force potential, smothered by the biochemical treatments given to him at a young age. It was a relatively inexpensive procedure to counteract the chemcial reagents, and slowly but surely his nervious system reverted to normal.
But the results could hardly have been expected. The treatment was not equally effected, and Ilal's leg suffered extensive nerve damage. At the same time, Ilal gained intense Force sensitivity for the first time in his life, and almost went insane from the rush of new data and the resultant telekinetic abilities, half-remembered from childhood dreams. He progressed quickly however, and after ten years of probation and testing, his inherently decent and compassionate nature blossomed fully, and became renowned as a solid prospect for becoming a Jedi Knight. He spent much of his time apprenticed out to various physicians working on the Rim, learning more and more and growing deeper and deeper into the Force. He grew strong in combat capabilities as well, and began to serve as bodyguard to his Master. Both were tasked with increasingly controversial missions as crime lords became increasingly powerful on the skirts of Republic Space.
When new territory became difficult to conquer, local crime lords began to try to solidify their hold and began fighting over the now lucrative local rackets. Unsatisfied with petty intimidation, many turned to individually tailored biological weaponry: diseases or organisms that would attack anyone with a specific gene marker. Anyone related to a target as far back as ten generations would die. If such localized methods proved unsatisfactory, then biological carpet bombing would be used, sending layer after layer of diverse and divergent diseases impossible to combat with local medical resources. After three months, everyone would be dead, and the weapons would cease to reporoduce, leaving the planet clean of any further resistance.
After three colonies were cleaned off in this fashion, the Jedi Council sent Ilal and his master off to garner the tools of these crime lords, and create effective countermeasure. It was during this time that Ilal earned his rank of Jedi Knight, providing cover for his Master who was gathering samples and stealing data to look for a weakness. The level of protection he was able to provide, as well as his contribution to the analysis after the snuck off planet, earned him the title of Jedi Knight. The two were able to develop an effective series of vaccines to protect other colonies, and in exchange for this Ilal was moved to Coruscant. Where the real work began....
