It was a normal day around Byss. The Republic fleet was prepping for a tactical exercise. Pilots readied thier craft with dud missiles and set lasers to be harmless infrared. The fleet and the Republic military had done these sorts of tactical exercises many times before. "War Games" they were called, and essentially it pitted one unit against another in a bid not to compete, but to make the fleet stronger as a whole.
Several ships were already in orbit and waiting for others still to rendezvous with the rest of the exercise fleet. As they waited, there were pilots testing thier systems, com officers doing a systems check and all was checking out. All the com traffic and navcomputers spoke of operating at peak efficiency. It looked to be another day that perhaps Blue unit would beat out the Gold unit. The exercises were meant to test against one thing: it was meant to prevent a large fleet from being able to conquer. Namely, it was all the regurgitation of lessons learned from the last Sith War.
The scanners never picked up the approaching attack. The pilots never fired off a single shot. The ships suddenly lost the ability to navigate or to make the report. In an instant, all communications and navigations were knocked out.
Commanders scrambled to see what the cause was. Some blamed faulty wiring: some of the ships were rather aged, even showing the battle scars from the last Sith War. Others worried that Com Central had been knocked offline. It still wouldn't have explained the lack of navigations. Navcomputers were separate from the com lines. It became clear as the minutes pressed on.
The lines had been down for more than a minute...now the exercise had been scrapped and the com line systems were being searched for any evidence of any fowlplay or sabotage.
Now they had been down for two minutes, there was yet any sign that anything had gone awry with the sytems and thier parts. Surely there was a problem with the software, but for the entire fleet?
Four minutes had passed and the systems were being rebooted one by one on every ship and fighter. It was a blessing that this far out from Byss, the ships weren't running the risk of being pulled down by the planet's gravity well. There was a panic as the systems had been down not through any known technical flaw within the fleet. This had clearly been the work of an outside attack.
Five minutes had passed and to any military unit, that was a lifetime while out in the field. The systems were coming back online. One by one, the ships' systems rebooted. One by one, they were all returning to some resemblance of normal. Now the com officers and commanders both began to check mainframes and on-board computers.
Two things were becoming clear: they had been hacked and that the virus had a life-span of five minutes. This spoke volumes to the chain of command as it became clear that someone, someone with what looked to be a pirate network signature, had managed to do something that was unthinkable. Whoever it was, that someone had written a virus and with it, humbled some of the best units in the Republic Navy.
Somewhere out there, there was the culprit responsible. Somewhere, where they wouldn't think to look, there was a pair of golden eyes staring into a computer screen waiting for the word to come out on the Holonet. Somewhere out there, there was a very satisfied Sith sitting behind a computer wearing a dark smile and whistling with glee...
...Somewhere out there, a plan to do more than toy with the Republic was brewing.
